Terms of Service
Last updated: 1 July 2026
These terms govern your use of Komodo Captions (“the App”), a Mac desktop application published by Komodo (“we,” “us,” or “our”).
By installing or using the App, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the App.
1. What the App does
Komodo Captions is a Mac desktop application for generating word-level video captions. It transcribes video using a bundled Whisper model running locally on your Mac's Neural Engine, and lets you edit and render captions into video files.
The App runs entirely on your Mac. We don't operate a server that processes your videos, and we don't have access to any data you create or import into the App.
2. License
Komodo Captions is licensed, not sold. When you purchase the App via the Mac App Store, you receive a non-transferable, non-exclusive license to use the App on devices linked to your Apple ID, subject to Apple's standard App Store License Agreement.
The Pro Unlock in-app purchase grants you permanent access to the App's full functionality within the v1 series of the product (versions 1.0.x). Major version releases (v2.0 and beyond) may be offered as separate paid upgrades.
3. Free trial and purchase
The App includes a 14-day free trial of all Pro features. After the trial expires, the in-app purchase (“Pro Unlock,” $39 USD) is required to continue exporting captioned video. You can edit and preview captions at any time during or after the trial, whether or not you've purchased.
Pricing may vary by region and currency. The $39 USD price is the US App Store reference price.
4. Refunds
Apple handles all refunds for App Store purchases under their standard refund policy. To request a refund, contact Apple directly: reportaproblem.apple.com.
We don't process refunds because we don't process payments — all purchases go through Apple's StoreKit.
5. Your content
Anything you create or import into the App — your video files, your edited transcripts, your custom caption styles, your uploaded fonts — belongs to you. We don't claim any rights to it. We don't access it. We don't have a copy of it.
You're responsible for ensuring you have the rights to use any video, font, or other content you import. If you upload a font file you don't have a license to use commercially, that's between you and the font's licensor.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to use Komodo Captions to:
- Create captions for content that is illegal in your jurisdiction
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code
- Resell, sublicense, or redistribute the App or its components
- Circumvent the trial or the in-app purchase
- Use the App in any way that violates Apple's App Store Review Guidelines
We don't actively monitor your usage (we can't — the App is local), but the above clauses give us standing to refuse support or revoke licenses in the rare case of bad-faith misuse.
7. Disclaimers
The App is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to fitness for a particular purpose. Transcription accuracy depends on audio quality and is not guaranteed.
We make no warranty that the App will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that defects will be corrected within any specific timeframe. We commit to making reasonable best efforts to fix significant bugs in subsequent versions.
8. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Komodo and its individual operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the App, including but not limited to lost profits, lost video files (though the App should never cause this — we don't modify your original video), or business interruption.
Our total liability under these terms is limited to the amount you paid for the App's Pro Unlock — currently $39 USD.
9. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms occasionally. Material changes will be announced in the App's release notes for the version that introduces them. Continued use of the App after a terms update constitutes acceptance of the new terms.
10. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of England and Wales.
11. Apple-specific terms
Because Komodo Captions is distributed via the Mac App Store, the following Apple-required clauses apply:
- These terms are between you and Komodo, not between you and Apple.
- Apple is not responsible for the App or its contents.
- In the event of any conflict between these terms and Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, the Apple EULA prevails to the extent of the conflict.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you.
