Privacy Policy

Plain English

Komodo Captions does not collect, store, transmit, sell, or share any of your personal data. We don't have user accounts, we don't track your usage, and your videos never leave your Mac.

If you've read other privacy policies for caption tools, you know they usually run to 4,000+ words explaining the dozens of data categories collected. This one is short for a real reason: there is nothing to disclose.

What we collect

Nothing.

Specifically, we do not collect:

  • Personal information (name, email, phone number, address, IP address)
  • Account credentials (you don't make an account — there's no sign-in)
  • Usage analytics (we don't track what you do inside the app)
  • Crash reports sent to third parties (Apple's App Store Connect collects aggregate, anonymized diagnostic data only if you opt in via macOS System Settings — that's between you and Apple, not us)
  • Audio or video data (your media stays on your Mac; transcription runs locally via WhisperKit)
  • Transcript content (we don't see your captions; they live on your Mac)
  • Location data
  • Contact lists
  • Photos library access
  • Camera or microphone access
  • Browsing or search history
  • Advertising identifiers

Where your data lives

All Komodo Captions data lives in macOS's standard sandboxed app container at:

~/Library/Containers/com.komodo.captions/

This includes your recent projects list, saved caption styles, color swatches, custom uploaded fonts, and trial state. None of it is transmitted anywhere. macOS controls who can access this folder; only you and the Komodo Captions app can read it.

Network requests

The only network requests Komodo Captions makes are:

  1. Apple StoreKit — when you purchase the Pro Unlock or restore a previous purchase. This connects to Apple's purchase verification servers. Apple's privacy policy governs this transaction; we receive only an anonymized transaction receipt.
  2. iCloud / CloudKit (when enabled) — to sync your trial start date across your Macs, so you can't accidentally re-start the trial by reinstalling the app. We never see this data — it's stored in your private iCloud database, accessible only to you under Apple's iCloud privacy terms.

No other endpoints are contacted. No analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporting to third parties, no advertising networks, no “check for updates” beacon when running from the Mac App Store (Apple handles updates separately).

Third parties

Komodo Captions does not embed any third-party SDKs that collect data. We don't use Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Sentry, Firebase, Crashlytics, Adjust, AppsFlyer, or any equivalent.

The transcription engine (WhisperKit) is an on-device CoreML port of OpenAI's Whisper model. It runs locally on your Mac's Neural Engine. No audio data is transmitted to OpenAI, Apple, Argmax (the WhisperKit maintainer), or anyone else.

Children's privacy

Komodo Captions is rated 4+ in the App Store and does not collect data from anyone, including children. There is no account system, no chat, no user-generated content shared between users, and no in-app purchases other than the one-time Pro Unlock.

Your rights

Because we don't collect any data, there's nothing for us to delete, export, or correct on your behalf.

If you want to remove all Komodo Captions data from your Mac:

  1. Quit the app.
  2. Delete ~/Library/Containers/com.komodo.captions/.
  3. (Optional) Delete the app from /Applications/.

That's it. Your data is gone. We have no record on our servers to delete, because we have no servers.

Updates to this policy

If we ever start collecting data — which we have no plans to do — we will update this policy and notify users via the App Store update notes for the version that introduces the change. We will never change this policy retroactively or quietly start collecting data.
